I like to see credit given where credit is due.

It is true that the style played by Stan Kenton's band is his own idea—and that Ralph Yaw had nothing to do with the style.

It also is true that when Stan took his job at the Rendezvous at Balboa, it would have been a little harder playing the job if Ralph hadn’t had a lot of originals and arrangements in the library, which Stan himself will admit were very popular with the crowds attending Balboa.

It is true that Stan gave Ralph a break by playing a lot of Ralph's originals on the Mutual network.

Stan has made quite a few transcriptions for MacGregor transcriptions, which are being re­leased to radio stations for broad­ casting only.

Now no man is going to risk his reputation on a bunch of inactive originals and arrangements if he thinks they are no good; especially when he is on his way to the top. Yet, Stan has used originals ten or more of Ralph’s original arrangements on these transcriptions.

It is all right to write in and correct an article when the writer is misinformed, but I don't believe in seeing how bad you can cut the party that received the credit thru no fault of his, and I believe Stan will agree with me as he and Yaw are the best of friends.

I am a mutual friend of both and would like to see this end here.

Thanks for a swell magazine. I’ve been reading it for four years now. But believe, it or not, I have never written you a letter before. I have never had a complaint before. Comes the revolution!

I notice that lately your mag is noticeable because of lack of publicity about America’s number one non commercial white band…Stan Kenton.

Most of your comment about Stan’s band has been sluffed off as a ‘stylized production band.’ Hell, yes, Kenton has a style…original, non commercial and 100% musical.

I don’t think he’s recorded it yet, but the greatest number in his books is a little opus entitled Concerto to End All Concertos and it’s just that. Words can’t describe it. It’s the best thing as a tie up between jazz and symphony you could find with big chords and fine solos.

Kenton cracked all records at Meadowbrook despite the tire shortage. New Jersey is sold on Stan. So is the west coast and so will Chicago be in December when he goes into the Panther Room in the Sherman. Wait till the rest of the country gets wise.

According to advance reports, Stan Kenton should have been Shaw and Ellington combined with Miller thrown in for good measure. Well, Kenton is no myth but he is a grand guy with a good band. If Kenton represents the taste of the west coast, I'd say they have good taste.

Congratulations! That story on Stan Kenton was terrific. I guess I'm one of those rabid Kenton fans and have been since I first saw him in Bal in the summer of ’41.

Kenton, in my opinion, is much like the Duke in that the average person grows to like him. Of course there are the ones like myself who went out of the world the first time they heard him and are still that way.

His records are by no means typical Kenton unless it would be for the
Gambler's Blues twelve incher (Decca 15063) which is more like the real stuff. Incidentally, some of the squares who don't like Kenton should dig that one. It’s a shame that one of the ‘big three’ can't record his arrangement of St. Louis Blues on two sides of a twelve inch platter. I'll bet my bottom dollar it would come close to topping BG’s Sing, Sing, Sing in popularity. Keep it up. You’re swell!

I saw Les Brown eight times in two weeks at Detroit and in my estimation (outside of Stan Kenton) he has one of the finest bands in the country today. His tenor saxman (Ted Nash) is really good.

As for Stan Kenton, there is a man who knows how to lead a band. He’s always smiling and goes through a lot of exercises when he directs. I’ll take Stan Kenton any day, for treating fans like he appreciates them, and for his fine jump tunes.

... Stan’s music may be banal at times, but what music isn’t? May I now commit the unpardonable sacrilege of stating that some of the prized gems of the classics display their particular kind of triteness, which has existed over a longer period of years. Take for example the loud and unlovely chord that is repeated several times at the end of practically every symphony. You take it! I can’t!

Jazz, in many ways, needs to be rejuvenated. Kenton has particularly drawn attention to this fact by creating an untried, unique style of his own. People have reacted to his music in many ways. Some people like it because they prefer music fast and furious. But Kenton’s true admirers like his music for its refreshing ideas, its unusual styling, and its complex nature. On the negative side there are those who don’t like it simply because they don’t like jazz of any type. Some consider it loud, harsh, poorly arranged. Others are confused by it, can’t understand it. The indifferent ones consider it a passing craze.
Though Stan himself may not fulfill his dream of revolutionizing jazz, he will. I believe, blaze a path for the future band masters. He is, so to speak, a pioneer.

I have been a Kenton fan for three years now, and I am proud to say I have nearly all of his records and albums. I was first initiated to the Kenton style by such resonant numbers as Collaboration and Machito.

I recall reading several articles by Kenton in Down Beat, and in each case he has more or less expressed the fact that he was disgusted because he couldn't play the type of jazz he really wanted to play. He said it was "work" to play numbers like Love for Sale and Blues in Riff, and that his type of music should be of the concert type.

I heard Innovations II in Chicago this past Armistice Day, and believe me, it was a big letdown. I expected to hear something on the Solitaire or Trajectories kick, but instead, he played September Song, Love for Sale, and most of the Stan Kenton Presents songs. Innovations was Kenton's chance to prove what he has advocated in the past. I was disgusted with most of the concert, and so were many other people.

I hope that Stan, in the future, will make up his mind what he wants, or what he is trying to prove.

Stan's The Man ...

Six to eight years ago, Stan Kenton was playing more real jazz than either Duke Ellington or Count Basie…We contend that Kenton is still playing more than they are…To us, jazz is more than blowing a short riff or putting a few turns around the melody of a standard…

One more thing that bugs us are the numerous "blurps," "bleeps," and bad notes that come through on certain sides…Could it be that Ellington and Basie have less competent engineers, or is it that Kenton just employs better musicians?

It is a sad, sad thing that the critics hardly recognize one of the most significant contemporary jazz voices…
